Teaching Philosophy

"Learning is not so much an additive process, with new learning simply piling up on top of existing
knowledge, as it is an active, dynamic process in which the connections are constantly changing
and the structure reformatted."
K. Patricia Cross

I hear, and I forget.  I see, and I remember.  I do, and I understand.
                                           Chinese Proverb

The above quotes are two of my favorites about teaching and together summarize my philosophy
about teaching. Learning is about relationships. It is about how information is connected to create
structures of thought. The assimilation and integration of information is what sets us living beings
apart from the non-living. As the quote states, "it is an active, dynamic process."

I believe it is the teacher's role to create an environment to foster these connections. The teacher
helps to guide the student through the maze of information. The way this can be done is illustrated
in the Chinese proverb. Again the emphasis is on active learning. To do is to understand. The
teacher guides and challenges the student through the teacher-student relationship.
